Likely the most common verse in the Bible heard by most all over the world, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
But I want to draw your attention to at least two other verses that say what it means or that it takes to have Life-Everlasting. First lets understand that Life-Everlasting is not just some future time or event, to which we would start to have Life-Everlasting (or Eternal-Life).
Luke 10:25-28
And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
Jesus is saying to have life (now and forever) is to love God and to love others.
Genesis 3:22
And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
The Tree of Life is Jesus (love). Eat of it means, to Believe and Do it. Do Love.
God is saying, to have Life-Everlasting it to chose to Love God and love others.
Taking of the Tree of Life is to chose Jesus, which is to chose the nature of Jesus, which is to love God and to love others. Thus, this will bring us to having Life-Everlasting.
What I have found, is that many Christians think that it means "a Ticket to Paradise", which starts once Jesus returns for his second coming. But what's likely not fully realized or appreciated is the fact that we are given Life-Now, so that we can love God and one another now. As soon as we are "Born-Again" we are sealed with the holy Spirit of Promise and translated into the kingdom of His dear Son (love), and seated in heavenly realms (See Ephesians 1:13, Ephesians 2:6, Colossians 1:13). We are dead to sin and alive in love. We are no longer of the self-gratifying, self-centered, selfish motive of getting. We are new and born of God (love). It is Christ that lives in our heart and mind. Sin cannot live in Love. The devil cannot live in God. Fear cannot live in Love. A loving heart does not have a selfish or self-gratifying heart.
I can't be a saint and a sinner. I cannot be a tree of good and a tree of corrupt. Jesus came to change my heart or motive to love. He came to get the get out and put the give in. He has given my his nature, heart, and mind. This is who I am. I am Whose I am.
Colossians 1:26-28, "Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:"
1 John 5:18, "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not."
You see, it is God's love that lives in a Christian's heart and mind. You can only have one nature and one identity. Love or not love. God is love. God lives in you, and loves through you.
Life-Everlasting comes by believing in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, which includes a new nature or heart of love. Loving God and others is the nature of Jesus.
This is what is meant to have Life-Everlasting.
Believing in Jesus = Loving others.
